Design a guide for an interactive experience that helps your audience become familiarized with Austin’s unique ecological place and supports the mission of Festival Beach Food Forest. In the process, your audience should re-imagine themselves as stewards and participants of Austin’s ecology.

Requirements

Groups

I encourage you to form groups of 2-3, but you’re also welcome to work solo. Scope your project up / down accordingly.

Constraints

Projects must adhere to these constraints:

• Audience. Your activity should appeal to a variety of audiences, from the general public to permaculture enthusiasts.
• Permaculture. Help your audience understand an aspect of permaculture as it manifests at Festival Beach Food Forest.
• Stewardship. Create (even indirectly) pathways for motivating agency and involvement in care for land.
• Kin. Design an activity that affords getting to know the land through observation and noticing. Elevate details of the place that show (or don’t show) livability. For example : what organisms are thriving here (or elsewhere)? How do they act in the heat (or various other microclimates)?
• Reciprocity. We tend to the plants and the plants “tend to” us.

Support Festival Beach Food Forest

This is the most important constraint. You should design your artifact to support Festival Beach Food Forest (through providing a relevant educational design as resource), where Cat has been embedded as a volunteer for 3 years.

There will be extra credit opportunities to visit and volunteer in this space and conduct research / get feedback to inform your designs, such as: conduct interviews with volunteers and participants, using data from the food forest, etc.
