an open studio experience?

This sophomore review plan hopes to manifest a design review process that is both a rigorous review of design work and a joyful and community building experience.

To do this, reviews must be open, celebratory, and interactive. Thus, all sophomore review presentations and open studios will be open for all to see—students, faculty and staff. Additionally, both student presenters and faculty will be introduced to one another before reviews begin.

An open and celebratory posture gives the UT Design community a bird's eye view of one other's work in a mode of awareness that is a possible site of collective pride, belonging, and cross pollination.

As opposed to a review process in which each individual student faces a panel of design faculty (sometimes strangers) in solitude, openness also encourages solidarity and encouragement from friendly faces.

Ideally, students should leave sophomore review with more confidence and security in their emerging design practice. They have idea of where they can go. Ideally, faculty will leave sophomore review with an idea of where this group of design students are in terms of craft, concept, and design interests. As an added bonus, faculty can more readily cross pollinate with faculty reviewers.
